Roles and Responsibilities
International Business Machines, Chicago, IL.:
Network Specialist:
Responsible for performing both short-term Rapid Response work and
long term project work related to PC Networking (e.g. NOS install-
ation and support, server installation and support, workstation
hardware and OS installation and support, LAN/WAN installation and
support, etc...). Performed, for various TSS customers, LAN traffic
analysis and troubleshooting using Network General Sniffer/Novell
LANalyzer/IBM DatagLANce; performed installation and support of OS/2
and OS/2 LAN Server; worked on IBM K-12 help desk (ICLAS/Netware);
installed and supported IBM ICLAS/Netware 2.15c networks; provided
troubleshooting and problem resolution of Macintosh MACTCP to SCO
Unix problems; installed and troubleshot Windows NT 3.51 File and
Print Services for Netware; installed and troubleshot Netware MPR
(multiprotocol router); troubleshot 5250 connectivity problems.
Network Consultant/Senior Network Specialist:
In addition to previous responsibilities, responsible for performing
project management and team lead work, as well as providing support/
mentoring to Network Specialists throughout the Western Region.
Developed regional training policies for Regional Manager; Lead a
five member installation team on a regional rollout for a large
healthcare provider (e.g. completed ten sites in three states,
wherein servers were installed/migrated from Netware 3.1X to 4.1X,
workstations were installed/migrated DOS to Win.95, applications
were installed/migrated from DOS to MS-Office 95, E-mail was
installed/migrated from WP Office to GroupWise, and cabling was
installed/upgraded CAT3/RG62U to CAT 5/10bT/Fiber); worked as the
Technical Project Manager for the IBM PC Company managing any and
all technical issues related to IBM PC Company products as they arose
for a major IBM account (e.g. ThinkPad, desktop, and server driver,
installation, and operational issues related to the customer's Windows
for Workgroups or Windows NT workstation and server platforms,
hardware configuration issues, acted as intermediary between the
customer and IBM's technical support organizations, acted as
intermediary between the customer and/or the local IBM Client Team
and IBM's support and manufacturing organizations, managed IBM/TSS
Network Specialist working on IBM hardware certification issues at
the customer's San Ramon facility, etc...); installed NetPC's, Line
Printers, report/check printers, and updated 10BT hubs at multiple
sites in Central Ca. for a large wholesale veterinary supply company;
provided on-site support to the Stockton loan processing department
of a large Savings Bank, troubleshooting various workstation
usability/connectivity issues with their OS/2 2.11/CM2/DB2/LAN
Requester 4.0/TCPIP-based Loan Processing package; performed on-site
testing for large Novato-based insurance company, helping to develop
workarounds/documentation related to CID installation of OS/2
4.0/'Merlin' and Windows NT 4.0/SP3 on a new ThinkPad model; worked on
a Y2K project for a large department within the State of California
government, as the project's senior NT Networking Specialist, with
a variety of responsibilities (e.g. installed NT/SQL-based desktop
inventory software on NT 4.0/SP3 servers; developed Netware login
scripts for automated install/execution of client-based desktop
hardware/software inventory software; developed custom OS/2
installation diskette for use by remote installers when installing
client code on OS/2-based workstations; developed procedures to allow
for WAN-based inventory/execution of desktop hardware/software
inventory software on MS-IP-only clients (most of the department's
clients were Novell/IPX-based); documented MS-Client TCP/IP support
and NetWare LAN Admin requirements related the Y2K Desktop Assessment
Project Configured/re-configured Compaq Proliant 3000 server hardware
to support various hardware/RAID configurations in testing;
customized/tested changes to the MS-SQL 6.5 server configurations
made during installation of the desktop hardware/software inventory
software);and performed varied Rapid Response work ranging in duration from a
few hours to a few days in length (e.g converted the Seattle office of
a bulk-mailing company from DOS-based to Windows95-based workstations;
performed LAN Doctor/DatagLANce monitoring of a Token-Ring/LAN Server
environment located in a So.Cal. branch of a large Savings Bank; helped
configure a 40 station Netware LAN in San Francisco from DOS/PC Support-
based workstations to WFW/Client Access-based workstations; installed
new workstations and servers for the Troy, MI. office of a large
Personnel Agency to convert said office from DOS/Netware 3.12 to
Windows95/Office/Outlook/Exchange/SQL/NT 4.0).
Sr. IT Specialist:
Provided Sr./Level 3 OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Server, ADSM, and NT consulting
and support services to a major Northwestern retailer.
Technical Consultant:
Provide Intel-based platform support to IBM ISV's (e.g. Integrated Solutions Vendors)
and developers who are evaluating, testing, and/or using IBM e-Business software
products.
CompuCom Systems, Inc., Stockton, CA.:
Systems and Configuration Engineer:
Responsible for the support of all systems on premises (e.g.
Netware and OS/2 servers, local Lotus Notes server, Windows and
Macintosh workstations), all premise voice and data communications
wiring, Toshiba phone system, the support of all LAN-based processes/
procedures/code/images related to the configuration of customer's
ordered equipment (e.g. CID, Netware Saber menus, Macintosh System
7 alias', etc...), as well as the configuration of complex customer
orders (e.g. servers, difficult workstation configurations, etc...).
Performed Netware 3.11 system administration, DaVinci E-Mail system
administration, Lotus Notes 3.X system administration, installation of
new OS/2, Windows, or Macintosh in-house workstations, installation
of new Netware or OS/2 in-house code/configuration servers,
installation of local Lotus Notes server, installation of new CAT3
phone connections, coordination of outside vendor to perform phone
switch and alarm systems maintenance and upgrades, installation of new
CAT3 and CAT5 10bT drops, installation of new frame relay router,
installation of new 10bT hubs, installation of new STP Token Ring
network, support and modification of existing in-house Clipper
applications, implemented new Aristo LAN-Based shipping platform,
setup and configured (hardware and software) various customer
server orders regularly (e.g. NT Server 3.1, NT Server 3.50,
Netware 2.2, Netware 3.11, Netware 4.01, Netware 4.02, SCO Unix
System V, OS/2 LAN Server 3.0, OS/2 LAN Server 4.0), maintained
in-house PC's and printers, implemented and supported tape
backup procedures for various in-house server platforms (e.g. Sytos
for OS/2, BackupExec for Netware, ArcServe for Netware, Maynard
8mm tape hardware, Quantum DLT tape hardware), supported workstation
TCP/IP connectivity (e.g. manual administration of IP addresses,
Netware IP routing configurations, workstation LAN Workplace for
DOS configurations, troubleshooting, etc...) to remote Corporate
SCO UNIX hosts, participated in customer tours of the facility
(representing Systems and Configuration Engineering), installed/
configured/supported two IBM Source Routing Token Ring bridges
(one remote and one local).
Senior Systems and Configuration Engineer:
In addition to previous responsibilities, was responsible for technical
leadership of local PING (Project Integration and Networking Group)
group, setting of Corporate configuration/distribution standards,
and facilitating communications between Systems and Configuration
Engineering personnel in both configuration and distribution centers
(e.g. West coast and East coast). Designed and specified future
computer room/network enhancements, developed corporate Virus Control
policy, and represented Systems and Configuration Engineering on
corporate ISO-9000 round table.
San Joaquin County, Stockton, CA.:
Office Systems Analyst:
Responsible for the support of all non-mainframe departmental
systems (e.g. minicomputer, LAN/WAN, PC's, development, end users).
Monitored/supported MUMPS-based Plessey (PDP-11) minicomputer,
built/installed/supported departmental LAN/WAN (Netware 3.11,
10b2, Arcnet, EtherTalk, LocalTalk, 56Kb LAN2LAN routers),
built/installed/supported departmental PC 'clone' workstations and
Netware servers, provided end user support to +12 departments within
HCS, installed/supported Macintosh/OS/2/DOS/Windows 3.1/Windows NT 3.1
workstations, created training materials and held classes for
new WAN-based E-Mail and Macintosh based Indo-Chinese word-
processing platform, developed/supported custom 4GL applications
for various departments in MagicPC, installed/supported data-
communications cabling at 3 separate sites (10b2, Arcnet/Coax,
LocalTalk/Phonenet, UTP RS-232), installed/supported LAN-based
shared printers.
Stockton Savings Bank, Stockton, CA.:
Mainframe Computer Operator:
Responsible for the completion of all nightly Mainframe Operations
during conversion from outside service bureau to in-house systems.
Monitored nightly operations of Unisys A1 and A6 mainframes,
started/restarted/debugged WFL jobs, started/restarted/loaded
forms for line printer print jobs, performed nightly and
end of week 9-track tape backups, developed various forms
for use with operations department, installed/upgraded/trouble-
shot PC's and terminals used within operations department,
monitored Racal-Milgo telecommunications network to branches
and interfaced with various carriers on line issues, monitored
Diebold ATM controller.
Customer Service Representative, Systems and Procedures (IS):
Responsible for supporting all PC and LAN-based systems,
PC and LAN to host connectivity, as well as end users.
Installed/maintained/supported SDI TDI-to-NetBIOS gateways,
monitored Racal-Milgo telecommunications network via Windows-
based CMS-400 network management console, installed/maintained/supported
five Advanced Netware 2.15B LANs (including Unisys servers, work-
stations, and 10b2 Ethernet segments), repaired/upgraded
various older PC 'clone' workstations, developed spreadsheet-based IS
budget system in Lotus 123 2.2, developed IS call tracking system in
R-Base 3, developed various training documents, implemented
ArcServe server and workstation backup/backup procedures,
installed/supported LAN-based shared printers.
