Over the years, we've stumbled across a few things about the raising of a pet potbellied pig that we were completely unaware of, prior to our being trained by our own pet pig, Jasmine. While we have no way of knowing whether or not these 'tips' will also work with another pig (based upon the, uh, 'individuality' we came to appreciate in our own 'piggy princess'), we've created this page in the hopes that they may. Enjoy!

Jasmine's MOST Favorite Food:

MAZURI: Adult formula, 2/3 Cup per day (1/2 in AM, 1/2 in PM)

Jasmine's MOST Favorite Snacks (*IN MODERATION!!!*):

GRAPES: All varieties (so far), on or off the vine
GRAPE LEAVES: Thompson Seedless *ONLY*, on or off the vine
NUTS: All varieties except English Walnut (so far), in or out of the shell
POTATOES/SKINS: Cooked, raw, skins, anyway she can get 'em!
NUT BERRY: A wild bird seed sold by Wal-Mart
SQUIRREL FEED: Also sold by Wal-Mart, w/lots of dried corn
CORN COBS!!!: With or without corn (um, good crunchin'!!)
GREEN BEANS: Cooked, any variety (so far)
PEANUT BONES: Peanut-flavored dog bones, any variety (so far), favorite is Mother Hubbard
WATERMELON: Pretty messy, but lots of fun!!

Jasmine's LEAST Favorite Foods:

CUCUMBERS: Anyway, no way
ASPARAGUS: Anyway, no way (odd for a Stockton pig, eh?)
CELERY: Anyway, no way

Jasmine's MOST Favorite Things:

BEING SCRATCHED: Favorite spots are above the tail and between the front legs
BEING BRUSHED: Across the back and sides with a softer wire dog-brush
WET SAND: Cool to roll on/in, but doesn't get you WET!
LYING IN SUN: Stretched out in the warm sun, just like a cat

Jasmine's LEAST Favorite Things:

GETTING WET: Water, oil, lotion... You name it, she HATES it!
NOTE: We STILL force baby oil upon her, however, applied by hand,
as it's good for her skin, but BOY does she put up a fuss!
ELEVATION: *DON'T LIFT THE PIG!!!*
BEING RESTRAINED: Being attached to a leash (Not led) is o.k. *BUT*,
DON'T HOLD THE PIG WHEN SHE DOESN'T WANT TO BE HELD!
CHANGE: Based upon our relatively brief experiences with our own
pet pig, as well as other comments in various books, on the Web, etc...,
Potbellied Pigs, especially minatures (possibly due to selective breeding
that may have weakened certain organs, such as the kidneys), DO NOT
LIKE CHANGE!
This applies to changes in daily routine, housing, feed,
care, affection, etc.... PLEASE be aware of this, as we feel that a
combination of such changes may have contributed to a general decline
in our pig's health that we were, in the end, unable to reverse.

Jasmine's 'Home Sweet Home':

DOGLOO: Inside or out, a cozy place to snuggle up
BLANKETS: Wool, cotton, acrylic, large enough to roll up in
ROOTING PEN: A shallow, under-the-bed, plastic storage case, bottom only,
approximately 6" tall, 18" wide, and 48" long, filled with
smooth, oval, river/landscaping rock (approximately 3" to 5"
across) for her to root for her daily feed in.

LITTERBOX: Metal, approximately 5" high, 36" wide, and 48" long,
cleaned at least twice a week, filled with 'Cobby Cat' litter.
